Short description of Tyre
Tyre (صور) was the Phoenician city that founded Carthage and gave the ancient world its purple dye, and its ruins are listed by UNESCO. Two sites divide the town. Al-Mina by the sea has a colonnaded street, baths and a rectangular arena laid out over the old harbour quarter, while Al-Bass inland is reached through a Roman triumphal arch and holds a necropolis and the largest surviving Roman hippodrome. The old town on the peninsula keeps a Christian quarter of shuttered houses and a working fishing port. South of it runs a long sand beach, part of a nature reserve where turtles nest.
