Short description of Harissa
Harissa (حريصا) is a pilgrimage hill above the bay of Jounieh, crowned by a white bronze statue of the Virgin Mary that looks out to sea. A spiral staircase winds around its base to a viewing platform, and a modern basilica of glass and concrete stands beside it. Pilgrims come from across Lebanon and from the Christian communities of the region, in numbers that peak in May. A nine minute cable car, the Téléphérique, climbs from the coast through the pines and is a sight in itself. The lights of Jounieh below make the evening the best time to ride it.
