Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

Vintgar Gorge

Slovenia · Upper Carniola · 550 m

Description

Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is a spectacular limestone canyon near Bled and one of Slovenia’s best-known natural attractions. The Radovna River winds through the gorge for around 1.6 kilometers between steep rock walls, accompanied by wooden walkways, small rapids, pools, and waterfalls. At the far end, the 13-meter-high Šum Waterfall plunges into the river below. A historic stone bridge of the Bohinj Railway crosses the gorge, recalling the region’s railway heritage. Opened to visitors in 1893, the gorge combines dramatic scenery with an accessible walking experience and makes an excellent half-day excursion from Bled. Its striking landscapes offer a memorable introduction to the natural beauty of the Julian Alps.
