Description
The Škocjan Caves (Škocjanske jame) are among Europe’s most spectacular karst caves and contain one of the world’s largest known underground river canyons. The Reka River has carved a vast gorge through the limestone, disappearing underground and flowing for around 34 kilometers before reaching the Timava springs in Italy. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its immense chambers, dramatic collapse dolines and remarkable stalactite formations. Visitors pass through the Silent Cave and cross the Cerkvenik Bridge, suspended around 45 meters above the Reka. The Škocjan Caves combine spectacular natural scenery with the geological significance of karst, a landscape that gave this region its name.
