Celje, Slovenia

Celje

Slovenia · Savinja · 238 m

Description

Celje is the third-largest city in Slovenia and was the seat of the powerful Counts of Cilli, a prominent medieval dynasty whose influence at times rivaled that of the Habsburgs. Rising above the city, Celje Castle is the largest medieval castle complex in Slovenia and offers sweeping views across the Savinja Valley and surrounding hills. The Regional Museum traces the city’s history from Roman Celeia through the era of the Counts of Cilli and into the modern age. The compact old town blends medieval urban structures with historic townhouses and squares. The Museum of Recent History adds another perspective, exploring everyday life and the region’s turbulent 20th-century past.
