Description
Vianden is the most visited sight in Luxembourg outside the capital, a castle of grey slate roofs and round towers standing on a spur high above a slate-roofed village in the Our valley. Built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries and rebuilt from a ruin in the twentieth, it is among the largest fortified residences west of the Rhine. A chairlift climbs the opposite slope for the view back across it. Victor Hugo spent his exile in a house by the bridge, now a museum, and a medieval festival fills the streets each summer.
