Description
Luxembourg City (Lëtzebuerg) is the capital of the Grand Duchy and one of the most dramatically sited cities in Europe, built on a sandstone promontory above the deep gorges of the Alzette and Pétrusse. Its fortifications were once called the Gibraltar of the North, and what survives of them, the ramparts and the Bock casemates tunnelled into the rock, carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The old town holds the Grand Ducal Palace, the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame and a dense run of squares and cafés. Below the cliffs the Grund quarter follows the river, reached by a free lift.
