Beaufort, Luxembourg

Beaufort

Luxembourg · Mullerthal · 330 m

Description

Beaufort holds two castles standing side by side in the same valley, which is what makes it unusual. The medieval fortress is a roofless ruin of grey stone walls, towers and a dungeon reflected in its old moat pond, while the Renaissance mansion next to it was built by a later lord who wanted comfort rather than defence and remains fully furnished. The estate distils its own blackcurrant liqueur and pours it in the courtyard. Forest paths run from the car park straight into the Mullerthal rock formations, and a lake nearby offers swimming in summer.
