Description
Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, founded around the abbey that the Northumbrian missionary Willibrord established in the seventh century. His tomb lies in the crypt of the basilica, and every Whit Tuesday the town fills for the hopping procession, a dancing pilgrimage recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The arcaded medieval market square, the abbey museum and a stretch of town wall make up the centre. A lake on the edge of town offers swimming and pedalos, and the sandstone gorges of the Mullerthal begin immediately behind it.
