Description
Esch-sur-Sûre is the most tightly sited village in Luxembourg, wrapped almost entirely by a hairpin loop of the Sûre so that only a narrow neck of rock connects it to the land. A ruined eleventh century castle crowns the rock directly above the slate roofs, floodlit after dark. A road tunnel cut through the neck is the way in. Just upstream the river is dammed into the long Upper Sûre lake, the largest body of water in the country and its main swimming, sailing and diving ground, set inside a nature park of wooded valleys.
