Description
Haifa (חיפה) runs up the side of Mount Carmel in three tiers from a working container port to a ridge with the whole bay laid out below it, and the Bahai Gardens fall down the middle of that slope in nineteen terraces around a gold-domed shrine, kept to a standard of trimming that has to be seen. They are the world centre of the Bahai faith and went on the UNESCO list in 2008. Haifa is also the most straightforwardly mixed city in Israel, with Jewish and Arab neighbourhoods that share the German Colony and the Wadi Nisnas market between them.
