Description
Ptuj is considered Slovenia’s oldest documented town and combines Roman heritage, a medieval old town, and vibrant local traditions. Situated on the Drava River, it was an important center of the Roman Empire under the name Poetovio and still preserves numerous traces of its long history. Rising above the historic streets, Ptuj Castle houses a regional museum, while the Orpheus Monument and the distinctive Town Tower rank among the old town’s landmarks. Ptuj is also renowned for the Kurenti, traditional carnival figures whose processions have shaped the town’s cultural identity for centuries. Their door-to-door rounds are recognized as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Ptuj remains one of northeastern Slovenia’s most important cultural and historic centers.
