Description
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where southern white rhinoceros live in the wild, after poaching wiped the species out of the country entirely by the nineteen eighties. The herd here was rebuilt from a handful of founder animals and is guarded around the clock. Visitors track them on foot with a ranger, approaching to a few dozen metres across open savannah and woodland, which makes it one of the closest wildlife encounters in East Africa. The sanctuary also runs canoe trips on its swamp and night walks for bushbabies. The sanctuary lies directly on the road from Kampala to Murchison Falls.
