Description
Zaporizhzhia is where the Cossacks made their fortified island camp, and Khortytsia, the largest island in the Dnipro, is a national reserve of steppe, granite outcrops and a reconstructed Sich stockade that stands as the founding site of Ukrainian self-rule. The city itself is an industrial one built around the Dnipro hydroelectric dam of 1932, and its main avenue runs eleven kilometres in a straight line. The front line sits some forty kilometres south, the occupied nuclear plant is visible across the reservoir, and the city is struck often.
