Description

Kyiv (Kyjiw) is the Ukrainian capital and the oldest of the East Slavic cities, spread over green hills on the right bank of the Dnipro with a thousand years of gold domes above it. Saint Sophia's Cathedral holds mosaics and frescoes from the eleven hundreds under a baroque shell, and the Pechersk Lavra runs a network of catacombs where mummified monks are still visible in their niches. Since 2022 the city has lived under air raid alerts and long-range strikes, and Maidan Nezalezhnosti carries the flags of the war dead, but the restaurants, the metro and the theatres run.
