Description
Chernivtsi was the capital of Austrian Bukovina and still looks it, a Habsburg provincial town of pale plaster and cast iron that also spoke Romanian, Yiddish, Polish and Ukrainian and produced the poet Paul Celan. Its centrepiece is the former residence of the Bukovinian metropolitans, a vast brick campus of banded polychrome walls and majolica roofs built in the eighteen seventies and now the university, on the UNESCO list since 2011. The town came through the war largely untouched and takes in visitors from the Romanian border an hour to the south.
