Description
Uzhhorod (Uschhorod) is the westernmost city in Ukraine, close enough to Slovakia that the border runs along the edge of town and the Hungarian one is fifteen minutes away, and it has changed state five times since 1918 without moving. Its linden alley along the Uzh is claimed as the longest in Europe, and for a fortnight each spring the two thousand Japanese cherry trees planted along the embankment turn it into the country's most photographed street. The castle above holds a Renaissance palace and the open-air museum of Transcarpathian wooden churches sits beside it.
