Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine

Kamianets-Podilskyi

Ukraine · Khmelnytskyi Oblast · 240 m

Description

Kamianets-Podilskyi has the most improbable site of any town in Ukraine. The Smotrych river has cut a loop almost all the way round a limestone plateau, leaving the old town on a natural island joined to the land by one narrow neck, and the castle guards that neck from a rock spur of its own. Polish, Ottoman and Armenian quarters stand within a few hundred metres, and a Turkish minaret still carries a Marian statue that the Poles put on top when they took the town back in 1699.
