Description
Višegrad exists in most people's minds because of one book. The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, eleven stone arches thrown across the Drina in 1577 by the Ottoman court architect Sinan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the subject of Ivo Andrić's novel The Bridge on the Drina, which won him the Nobel Prize. The river below runs an improbable green. Above the town a purpose built stone village called Andrićgrad was raised by the film director Emir Kusturica as a homage to the writer.
