Description
Sutjeska is the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a block of high limestone between the Sutjeska gorge and the Montenegrin border. Its core is Perućica, a strict reserve holding one of the last two primeval forests left in Europe, where spruce reach sixty metres and the Skakavac waterfall drops through the canopy. Maglić rises to two thousand three hundred and eighty six metres on the border and is the highest point in the country. Zelengora carries a scatter of glacial lakes. At Tjentište three concrete wings mark the battle fought here in 1943.
