Description
Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and takes about half the country's visitors, a city in a narrow valley where minarets, an Orthodox cathedral, a Catholic one and a synagogue stand within a few streets of each other. Baščaršija, the Ottoman bazaar quarter, still works as a market of coppersmiths and cevapi grills. A line set into the pavement on Ferhadija marks where the Ottoman town ends and the Austro-Hungarian one begins. The siege of the nineteen nineties left scars that are now part of what visitors come to understand, and red-filled shell craters mark the streets.
