Description
Počitelj is a stepped Ottoman village stacked up a limestone amphitheatre above the Neretva, abandoned as a working settlement and kept as an ensemble. Stone houses climb in terraces to a tower called the Sahat Kula and a fortress on the crest. The Hadži Alija Mosque of 1563 sits halfway up with its domed roof. Pomegranates and figs grow on the terraces and are sold at the road below. The whole village can be walked in an hour, though the steps are steep and uneven throughout.
