Description
Ulcinj is the southernmost town on the Montenegrin coast, close enough to Albania that the population is mostly Albanian speaking and the calls to prayer outnumber church bells. A fortified old town stands on a rock above a small harbour and was a corsair base for two centuries. South of it Velika Plaža runs for twelve kilometres of flat sand, the longest beach on the eastern Adriatic, shallow and windy enough to have become a kitesurfing centre. Salt pans behind it draw flamingos and hundreds of other bird species.
