Description
Biogradska Gora is a national park in the Bjelasica range holding sixteen hundred hectares of virgin forest, one of only three left in Europe alongside Perućica in Bosnia and Białowieża in Poland. Some of the trees are past four hundred years old and reach sixty metres. At the centre lies Biogradsko Lake, a glacial basin ringed by that forest and circled by an easy path. The area was set aside in 1878 as a reserve for the Montenegrin prince, which makes it one of the oldest protected places anywhere. Five more glacial lakes lie higher on the massif.
