Description
Perast is a single row of baroque stone houses along the bay with no room to grow behind it, built by sea captains in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the town supplied navigators to the Venetian fleet. Sixteen palaces and seventeen churches stand in a settlement of a few hundred people. Two islets lie just offshore. One is natural and holds a monastery, the other was built up over centuries by boat crews dropping stones, and carries the church of Our Lady of the Rocks.
