Description
Kotor sits at the far end of a drowned river canyon that opens off the Adriatic, a bay so enclosed it is often mistaken for a fjord. The walled town below the cliff is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a triangle of Venetian squares and lanes with no straight line through it. Fortifications climb the mountainside behind in a zigzag of some thirteen hundred and fifty steps to the fortress of Saint John, four hundred metres up. Cruise ships berth close enough that the old town fills and empties by the hour.
