Description
Lovćen is the black mountain that gave Montenegro its name, a limestone massif standing straight up behind the Bay of Kotor and marking where the coast ends and the interior begins. On its second highest peak, at sixteen hundred and fifty metres, a mausoleum holds Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, prince-bishop and the national poet, reached by a tunnel and four hundred and sixty one steps cut through the rock. On a clear day the terrace behind it takes in most of the country and a good deal of Albania and Croatia.
