Description
Herceg Novi guards the mouth of the Bay of Kotor and has changed hands often enough that its fortresses come in four styles, Bosnian, Ottoman, Venetian and Austrian, stacked on a hillside above the water. The town climbs in stairs from the sea, which is why locals call it the town of a thousand steps. A botanical inheritance from sea captains who brought plants home means mimosa, camellia and palm grow through the streets. The mimosa festival in February is the first event of the Montenegrin year.
