Description
Cetinje was the capital of Montenegro through the centuries when the country was a prince-bishopric holding out against the Ottomans, and it keeps the institutions of that period in a small town on a karst plateau. A monastery holds relics said to include the right hand of John the Baptist. A dozen former embassies from the years around 1900 stand along one street, built when the great powers each kept a legation in a town of a few thousand people. The old royal palace is now the national museum.
