Short description of Tanji
Tanji is where the fish comes ashore, a long open beach south of the resorts covered every afternoon in painted pirogues, ice, buyers and gulls as the boats land their catch straight onto the sand. Racks of smoking fish stand behind the beach and the smell carries a long way inland. It is chaotic, entirely genuine and the single most photographed working scene in the country. A bird reserve of dune and lagoon runs a long way down the coast beside it. A small village museum nearby shows how people along this coast once lived.
