Short description of Makasutu
Makasutu is a privately protected forest on a tidal creek inland from the coast, a thousand acres of palm, gallery woodland and mangrove that was bought to stop it being cleared. Visitors go up the creek by dugout at high water, walk the forest with a guide who explains the plants, and watch a palm wine tapper climb. Baboons and vervets are resident and easy to see. A small lodge built on stilts over the water takes the few who stay the night. It is by some distance the excursion the coastal hotels sell hardest.
