Short description of Juffureh and Kunta Kinteh Island
Juffureh and the neighbouring village of Albreda face a small island in the river that carried a slaving fort for two centuries, and the whole group is inscribed together as world heritage. The book that made the village famous traced one family from here to America, and a museum in each village now tells the wider trade it stood for. Boats run the short distance out to the ruins. The island has eroded badly and much of the fort has gone into the water. Baobab trees shade the landing place on the village side of the water.
