Description
Subotica sits ten kilometres from the Hungarian border and is the most Hungarian city in Serbia, with a Hungarian-speaking majority in the surrounding villages and street signs in three scripts. Its extraordinary set of Hungarian secession buildings went up in a burst around 1910, the city hall and the synagogue above all, both in coloured ceramic tile and stained glass from the Zsolnay works at Pecs. The synagogue was restored over twenty years and reopened in 2018 and is one of the finest art nouveau buildings anywhere in Europe.
