Description
Belgrade (Beograd) stands on the ridge where the Sava runs into the Danube, which is why it has been fought over roughly forty times and rebuilt after most of them. Kalemegdan fortress occupies the point itself and is now the city park, with the confluence laid out below it. Nothing here is preserved the way Prague is preserved, and the city trades instead on being alive at three in the morning, in the floating clubs moored along both rivers and in the bars of Savamala and Cetinjska. Skadarlija, the old bohemian lane, is the one deliberately pretty street.
