Description
Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina and looks nothing like the rest of Serbia, a Habsburg town of pastel facades laid out on the flat Pannonian plain with a Hungarian, Slovak and Ruthenian mix still in the villages around it. Petrovaradin fortress sits on the cliff across the Danube with eighteen kilometres of tunnels underneath it and a clock tower whose hands are reversed so boatmen could read it from the river. Since 2000 the fortress has hosted EXIT each July, which is the largest festival in southeastern Europe.
