Description
Golubac fortress stands where the Danube narrows to enter the Iron Gates, ten towers stepping up a rock spur straight out of the water, and it was restored and reopened in 2019 after the road that used to run through its middle was rerouted into a tunnel. Beyond it the river cuts the Djerdap gorge between Serbia and Romania, at points less than two hundred metres wide with cliffs rising three hundred metres, which makes it the largest river gorge in Europe. Lepenski Vir, an eight thousand year old settlement with carved fish-faced boulders, sits on the bank downstream.
