Description
Nis (Niš) is the third city of Serbia and one of the oldest in the Balkans, sitting on the road that has carried everything between Central Europe and Constantinople for two thousand years. Constantine the Great was born here. The Ottoman fortress in the centre is still complete and now full of cafes, and outside the town the Skull Tower is exactly what its name says, a stone tower the Ottomans faced with the skulls of Serbian rebels after a battle in 1809 as a warning. Fifty eight are still embedded in it.
