Description
Felix Romuliana (Feliks Romulijana) lies in this corner of the Balkans, where Emperor Galerius was born and built a palace around AD 300, naming it after his mother, Romula. What survives is a walled complex the size of a small town, with twenty towers, two temples, imperial baths, and precious floor mosaics, including depictions of Dionysus. The mosaics have been removed and are now displayed under protective cover. On the hill above stand the mausoleums and the burial pyres where Galerius and his mother were laid to rest and later deified. This makes Felix Romuliana one of the few places where the journey of a Roman emperor can be traced from palace to tomb.
