Description
Davolja Varos (Đavolja Varoš), the Devil's Town, is a field of two hundred earth pillars standing in a ravine in southern Serbia, each between two and fifteen metres tall and each capped by a flat stone that shelters the soft ground beneath it from rain. They form, collapse and reform over decades, so the count changes. Two springs nearby run so acidic and so heavily mineralised that nothing grows in them. Local legend explains the pillars as a wedding party turned to stone, which is the sort of story such a place attracts.
