Short description of Nkhotakota

Nkhotakota is one of the very oldest market towns anywhere in the region and was the terminus of the Swahili and Arab slave route down to the lake, a trade that Livingstone himself came here to argue against under a mango tree which still stands today. The wildlife reserve inland was almost empty until five hundred and twenty elephants were moved into it, the largest translocation of its kind ever attempted. Two lodges sit deep in the miombo woodland on the Bua, where the river runs down over rapids and the fishing for mpasa is good.
