Short description of Lilongwe
Lilongwe became the capital in nineteen seventy five and was built in two halves that still feel like separate towns, a planned government city of wide verges and roundabouts and an older trading quarter around the market. Almost every visitor passes through on the way to the lake or the parks and few stay long. The wildlife centre in the belt of woodland between the two halves takes in rescued animals and is the one sight everybody sees. The tobacco floors run their auctions right through the growing season and are open to visitors who ask.
