Short description of Namibe
Namibe sits where the desert meets the cold Atlantic and is the base for everything in the arid south, a low pastel port town that still carries its old name of Moçâmedes on half of its buildings. The road inland crosses whole fields of welwitschia, a plant that grows just two leaves and then lives for a thousand years or more. South of the town the Arco is a rock arch standing over a freshwater lagoon in otherwise completely bare desert. Iona, which is the largest national park in the whole country, begins just beyond it.
