Description
Mukachevo (Mukatschewo) is the second town of Transcarpathia and is dominated by Palanok Castle, a fortress on a sixty eight metre volcanic cone that held out against the Habsburgs for three years under a countess in the sixteen eighties and later served as an Austrian political prison. The town below is Hungarian in feel and largely was until 1945, with a pastel main square, a wooden Orthodox church moved here from a village and a Cyril and Methodius monastery on the hill opposite. Transcarpathian wine and thermal water are the other reasons to stop.
