Short description of Mashhad
Mashhad (مشهد) is the second largest city in Iran and the country’s most visited place by a wide margin. The shrine of Imam Reza covers a vast precinct of courtyards, mirrored halls, museums and libraries, and pilgrims arrive from across Iran and beyond throughout the year. The Goharshad Mosque on the same ground is one of the finest Timurid buildings anywhere. Away from the shrine the city is modern and busy, with saffron, barberry and carpet markets. The tomb of the poet Ferdowsi stands at Tus outside the city, and the valleys towards Shandiz and Torghabeh fill with restaurants on holidays.
