Short description of Hawraman
Hawraman (هورامان) is a landscape of steep Zagros valleys in Iranian Kurdistan where whole villages are stacked up the mountainside. The houses are built of dry stone without mortar, and the flat roof of one serves as the yard of the house above, so a village reads as a single stairway of terraces. Uraman Takht is the largest of them and the centre of the Hawrami people, who have farmed these slopes with walnut, pomegranate and grape terraces for thousands of years. The whole cultural landscape is listed by UNESCO. Kurdish is spoken here, and the winter Pir Shalyar ceremony fills the village for three days.
