Short description of Persepolis
Persepolis (تخت جمشید) was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid empire and is the most important ancient site in Iran. Darius and his successors raised a terrace against the mountain and built palaces, gate halls and an audience hall on it, reached by a monumental double stairway. The reliefs along that stairway show delegations from every province bringing tribute, carved in rows that still read clearly. Alexander’s army burned the complex, and the standing columns and doorframes date from before that fire. Royal tombs are cut into the cliff at Naqsh-e Rustam nearby, and Pasargadae with the tomb of Cyrus lies further north.
