Short description of Bam
Bam (بم) grew where a chain of qanats brought water to the edge of the Lut desert, and its citadel was the largest adobe building in the world. Arg-e Bam rises above the palm groves as a walled town of mud brick with a governor's quarter on the rock at its top. An earthquake brought much of it down, and it has been rebuilt slowly with the original technique, so walls, gates and stables stand again while other parts remain ruins. The listing by UNESCO covers the citadel together with the oasis, its irrigation channels and the date gardens that still supply the bazaar.
