Short description of Isfahan
Isfahan (اصفهان) was the Safavid capital and is the architectural high point of Iran. Naqsh-e Jahan Square is one of the largest squares in the world, framed by the Shah Mosque, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace and the entrance to a bazaar that runs for kilometres. The Jameh Mosque north of it records a thousand years of building in one complex, and both squares are listed by UNESCO. Bridges from the same period cross the Zayandeh Rud, with Si-o-se-pol and Khaju the best known. The Armenian quarter of Jolfa adds Vank Cathedral, cafés and coppersmiths.
