Short description of Kow Ata
Kow Ata is a warm sulphur lake in a cave under the Kopet Dag foothills, reached by a long flight of steps down into the dark. The water holds its temperature all year and people swim in it rather than tour the cavern, which is lit poorly and smells strongly of sulphur throughout. A colony of bats lives in the dark roof high above the bathers. Turkmen families arrive in numbers at the weekend and the pool can be busy. Above ground a modest bathing complex and roadside teahouses serve the passing traffic on the western highway.
