Short description of Ancient Merv

Merv was one of the great cities of the Silk Road and the ruin field left behind covers an enormous stretch of flat ground outside Baýramaly. Rather than a single site it is a chain of walled cities, each abandoned for the next, running from an Achaemenid citadel through Hellenistic and Sasanian walls to the Seljuk metropolis. The domed mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar stands alone at its centre and the corrugated walls of the Great Kyz Kala are the image most people carry away. Shade across the open site is almost absent. Visitors drive between the clusters rather than walk.
